pan y rosas release ravel by jenn kirby!

Jenn Kirby is a composer, performer and music technologist from Ireland and currently based in Scotland. She has a diverse creative output, including instrumental composition, electroacoustic music and avant-pop. Her music has been described as having a “sense of adventure and experimentalism.” Jenn’s performance work is centered around hybrid instrument design, building software, re-purposing hardware, and processing improvised vocalisations. She is a lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland.

On her new album, Ravel, Jenn explores different aspects of the manipulation of time. She asks how the digital results of manipulating time relate to her perception of time in the physical world. Having become comfortable watching videos at 2x speed, she recently found herself wanting to 2x a video call. In that moment, getting the information in real-time seemed inefficient. She wondered if she saw efficiency as simply squashing as much as possible into as little time as possible, and what that means for making and experiencing music.

The artifacts produced from extended time-stretching are further processed to create textures and glitches. The resulting fragments suggest things lost or things found. Through a collapsing, expanding and ravelling of information, something new is created. It is not simply the same thing played fast or slow, but a new ‘thing’ that is very different to the original source, though still connected to it. The foundations of the songs are improvisations and there were no restrictions on the processing and production except that nothing was redone. Though the material was shaped and transformed in many ways, it has an origin that is connected to a time, place and emotion.

pan y rosas release sometimes always never by cagey house!

cover

cagey house has been releasing music since 2005. the tracks generally start as sets of doodles and noodles, and are later edited together into semi-coherent selections. whenever possible, chance, accident, mistake, poor judgment, random acts, misguided notions, uninformed risk, and general ineptitude are incorporated into the compositional environment. cageyhouse always aspires to the sublime, gladly accepts the humorous, and in the absence of either, tries to at least be noisy.

his third album for pan y rosas, sometimes always never, is a short, sample based narrative. the sound is: mellow free. this, while at summer playground. pattern cycle, grasping voices. waver, ascension, bell, string.

pan y rosas discos release cucharas de arena by canned fit!

cda

canned fit is sound artist christine schörkhuber’s experimental performative new music act. she creates her sound sphere using hacked effect tools, finger microphones, voice, feedback and a trash orchestra of found sonorous footage. motorized cans vibrate in tune, the sound of materials like cans, tins, metal parts, electronic trash, paper, wood, water and wind are modulated and amplified through open mics.

canned fit’s first album for pan y rosas, cucharas de arena, is equally influenced by experimental improvisation and contemporary composition as it is by electronic dance music, rock and pop music. the primary influence however, comes from listening to the sound of life. the sound is: formation, dissolution and fugacity of shape and structure, distance and closeness, system and chaos. a tightrope between experimental music, soundscape composition and electronic songwriting.
