sky thing is john collins mccormick, an improviser and sound artist currently living in garrett, indiana. he studied with sound artist liz phillips at purchase college and the school of the museum of fine art, boston. his environment sensitive performances and installations are based around improvisation utilizing the natural comings and goings of the people and the space as well as transducers and contact mics. influences – riley, cage, young, oliveros, gamelan, coltrane, beat happening, phillips, beastie boys, circuits, etc.
he describes his sound as: percussive aspects of traditional instruments and extended performance techniques. reflected sound and light. improvisation in conjunction with composed electronics. acoustic sound becoming electronic. plunk rock. the outcome not known in advance. fourth world. collision of individuals, commencement of duality. flush and phased.
