marta sainz is an improviser who uses her voice and body to conduct her investigations of sound. her work draws from butoh, german expressionism as well as artaud’s theater of cruelty. she seeks to create an emotional shock for the spectator as they experience all aspects of her total performance. she also performs with lali barrière in the duo, un coup de dès; with miguel a garcía and enrique zaccagnin in the group destruction des animaux nuisibles; and in a duo with maryah marymoto.

her first album for pan y rosas consists of three pieces of free improvisation, recorded at home, in one take, in november of 2012 and january of 2013. she used her voice, objects, a ukelele, an analog synthesizer and various effects to create this, el sonido de las entrañas.

al karpenter is a meteoric noise rocker who lives and breathes music! his first album for pan y rosas features raw beat machine beats, electronics, feedback, blown out speaker box guitar, singing, skree chime, and a cover of pablo picasso. get it, now!

based in buenos aires, pianist nicolás chientaroli is an active member of the city’s jazz scene where, in addition to his trio, he leads the group, la gran cena; and co-leads the groups los improvisadores gráficos and las formas avanzan. he has also performed with the groups andrés elstein trío, caravana colemanica, proyecto orgánico rave, trío dumpty, francisco salgado cuarteto, and la hormiga.

ViajeraMente is the third album from the trio and the first on pan y rosas. for this album the lineup features chientaroli on piano, carlos álvarez on bass and sebastián groshaus on drums. the album contains a mix of compositions by chientaroli, group improvisations and a cover of dizzy gillespie’s be-bop.

agnès pe works on sound beyond the limits enshrined by any genre. her work is characterized by a fun and overwhelming attitude – an all or nothing style that covers the parameters of lo-fi music. this self-taught musicologist is a multidisciplinary researcher that is encapsulated by mystifying melodies and is always seeking new ways of relating to the elements she re-composes. she is interested in the non-common, regardless of their label.

cagey house has been releasing music since 2005. the tracks generally start as sets of doodles and noodles, and are later edited together into semi-coherent selections. whenever possible, chance, accident, mistake, poor judgment, random acts, misguided notions, uninformed risk, and general ineptitude are incorporated into the compositional environment. cagey house always aspires to the sublime, gladly accepts the humorous, and in the absence of either, tries to at least be noisy.

Surely what drew me to Indonesia was the gamelan. A connection through years of practice with the New York new-music group “Son Of Lion.” And there I met three marvelous musicians and played with them, drawn together by shared mind-in-the-moment music making – the only way it becomes an “universal language.”

hey everyone, the newness is here and this time it’s from andrea pensado!

andrea pensado works with sound as a performer, composer and teacher. she has been using digital media and live interactive musical systems since 1995. she studied in argentina and poland. at first she composed mainly for acoustic instruments, however, she gradually felt more attracted by different sound realms. today, the abrasive digital noise of her improvisations is far away from her earlier pieces. harsh dense layers of sounds, often interwoven with her voice, combine hybrid synthesis and sampling techniques to create a highly personal sound language, which reflects an intuitive, emotional and paradoxically also logical approach to music making. she currently lives in the united states.

teraz, tak!, her first album for pan y rosas, begins with a solo performance by andrea and is followed by a series of duets between andrea and the musicians: walter wright, davindar singh, adriana de los santos and alexei borisov who provide additional electronics, saxophone, piano and guitar respectively.

hey everyone, the newness is from the cátodo dúo! based in chile, the duo consists of amanda irarrázabal on double bass and ramiro molina on electric guitar. they began playing together in 2012 as a way of sharing their experiences in the field of the improvised music. built around a string concept, the duo easily moves from intense rhythmic situations to dense layers of noise. the music is totally improvised and their sound arises from treating instruments as sources of sound in every sense of the word using prepared instruments and avoiding conventional playing.

There’s something incredibly exciting when music is approached in a manner, or with an ambition that you hadn’t really been able to figure out before: this is one of those strange results where there’s an element that sounds fresh and original, despite the fact that serious types indulging in recording industrial noises and whipping guitar samples within an inch of their life are a pound to a penny these days. Maybe it just goes to show that there’s a hell of a lot more in your sensory armoury than gets tested.
